My work surrounds the idea of interaction; interaction with self, with others and interactions outside of myself and others. I make my work for anybody who purposely or accidentally comes into contact with it. I am influenced by my past self as well as my past work; the growth I have done and the growth that I am continuing to do. I am influenced by my relationship with myself and others; the relationships that flourish and the ones that fail.
Interactions are interesting to me, because interactions make up life. My work is often an act of healing-a rebellious act against what is expected of me or of my art. I seek to surprise others and often while trying to do so, I surprise myself. I've always said that I either feel things too much or too little. I want people to feel things the same way I do… Not the same things but the same way of feeling.
When creating, I take my thoughts, ideas, and emotions and convey them through a variety of means and media, whether that is a performance, a process, or a product...whether it is movement or making.
...And I allow for that to change. If I find something I am making and I recognize that the way I am making it doesn’t adequately portray the thoughts or feelings, or no longer serves a purpose for me, then I am not afraid to let that go and let it change so that it can serve me (and ultimately my audience) better.
Whilst creating, I often choose specific materials to carry message or meaning in my work. I also try to let those materials be things that I already own or that I have found. Everything that exists in a piece of art conveys meaning or allows for interpretation, whether you intend it to or not, so you might as well intend it.
Objects inherently carry context, it's the way we arrange these objects that reshapes the context and therefore the content that our work holds. I don't always have something to say… I am trying to feel and let others feel, too.
Furthermore, I’m not afraid to let the work become what it needs to become. This is true in both my dance making and visual art making- I'm not afraid to let my work inform me. If my work starts to make me feel something, then I know other people will feel something as well. That is, I know what I am trying to say (with my work) and it is more interesting to me when my work tells something I didn't know I was trying to say. It gets deeper. If there are layers to something, then there is a good chance that there is a layer that everybody can relate to in some way or another.
In short, my work is about interactions. For someone who often says “I am not afraid”, there is a lot of fear portrayed in my work and that is because interactions can often be intimidating. Relationships take vulnerability; My work requires vulnerability as well… on my part and on the viewer’s part. Don't be afraid to feel… and don't be afraid to think. Your thoughts on my work are just as valid as mine.
